REAL WOOD
Real Wood, Engineered, 3 layer are some of the terms used for wood floors which
are made from a top layer (3-4mm) Hardwood, the rest (10-11mm) being made of ply,
chip board, pine, this creates a sandwich of wood that is glued together. This makes
a very stable wood which can be laid as a floating floor (not fixed to sub floor).
This can be better than solid if you are in flats or above a ground floor, as you
can sound proof with underlay. It also can be easier to remove if problems arise.
Most real wood floors look like solid wood and can last as long, as you can re-sand
and lacquer them.
There are many styles and finishes available including lacquered, brushed, oiled,
matt lacquer, wax. We can supply from all of the major branded products such as
Kahrs, Tarkett, Boen etc., but we recommend Marty as this French Manufacturer offers
a huge choice of finishes and the quality is excellent.
We have a large selection of samples , which we have made into substantial sizes
to enable you to have more of a feel for the look of the floor, which can be borrowed
or bought round with the estimator.
SOLID WOOD
Solid wood floors are exacted what they sound like, the same wood throughout the
board with tongue and groove at the edges.
They range from 14mm up to 25mm in thickness. A 14mm board is more than adequate
for a busy family home. It is fitted on top of the sub floor stuck or nailed down
with the floor being level and sound.
You can fit solid wood boards to the joists of a house with the boards being more
than 18mm thick and load bearing. We only recommend this when it is a major refurbishment
to the property.
All real and solid wood floors will last many years and have the advantage of being
able to refinish them every 8-10 years.
